Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS)

ESOS logoThe Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS)…..

… is an energy assessment and energy saving scheme that applies to large companies with more than 250 employees and is estimated to lead to £1.6bn net benefits to the UK, with the majority of these being directly felt by businesses as a result of energy savings

The scheme comes into practical force on 5th December 2015 upon which all qualifying companies must have carried out an accurate ESOS assessment, otherwise they will face fines up to £50,000 plus a fine of £500 per day for a maximum of 80 days until the ESOS is completed. ESOS – Environmental Agency

The ESOS must be submitted to the Environment Agency and contain detailed records of how much energy is used in the business, where it is used and in what form, trended for the past 12 months. The requirement also goes on further to ask for energy improvement plans and targets (compliant with ISO 50001), controls and an Energy Management System (EnMS) which will recommend and install energy improvements.

ESOS Consultant North East, Time is Running OutMany companies have been instrumental in engaging ISO 50001 consultants or setting up their own internal teams such as Balfour Beatty who are about to appoint a new internal 4 person consultancy team in order to assess how much energy the companies 36,000 employees use. With the business turning over £ 4.6bn in the UK  in 2014, assessing the true Energy Saving Opportunities will be a considerable task.

Therefore it makes sense to start the assessment process as early as possible and either engage a professional consultancy or begin to build your own in house team.

The clock is ticking….
